… RSAC Scottish Rally, Fri/Sat, 19/20 May …
With 2 wins from the opening two rounds, BRC points leader Fredrik Ahlin will have a big target on his back as he heads into Scotland this weekend for the Scottish Rally. Osian Pryce ran him close on the Pirelli till brake trouble intervened while Tom Cave was on the case till his Hyundai broke its suspension.
Top ‘home’ seed David Bogie hasn’t had much luck this year and didn’t have much luck on last year’s Scottish either when the radiator burst. All he needs is a clean run, witness his fastest stage times on the final day of the Pirelli!
Jock Armstrong is the only other Scot in the top ten but Euan Thorburn, Shaun Sinclair and Mike Faulkner will be running right behind him. Rory Young should go well on home turf. He harvests Christmas trees in this area so he has intimate topographical knowledge while Mark McCulloch, Greg McKnight and Iain Wilson are worth looking out for.
And then there is Donnie MacDonald. John Morrison scored his first National Rally Cup win on the Pirelli and now leads the series, so Donnie the Ditch will be out for revenge.
Spectator Information:
Spectating is limited, thanks to the new motor sport rules and guidelines so if you’re intending to watch two runs of the same stage best take a packed lunch and some drinks (and perhaps a copy of the ‘Observer’s Book of Trees’ to pass the time between runs) to save driving about the countryside looking for rally cars. On that basis the rally organisers have provided access to six stages to see the action.
Also, as ever, please take your litter home for proper disposal, and park sensibly at all times – the Galloway Polis will be out and about!
Friday 19th May:
Ceremonial Start: High Street in Dumfries at 7pm
The Prestone British Rally Championship contenders will assemble (from around 6.15pm) ahead of the traditional rally start in the town.
Spectator Stage: Mount Joe from 7.50pm and again from 8.50pm
British Rally Championship crews will contest a double run of the Mount Joe Stage in the Greskine Forest on the Friday evening as the gloamin darkens the landscape, and there will be two chances to see the action.
The Spectator Area is accessible from the B7067 which runs parallel with the A74, so look out for the green Spectator Arrows mid-way between the Greenhillstairs (B719) junction and the Moffat/Dumfries (A701) junction.
Saturday 20th May:
On Saturday, the ARR Craib Scottish Rally Championship contenders will join the fray and the full field of almost 100 cars will contest six stages (SS3 to SS8) on Saturday with the BRC contingent contesting the final two (SS9 and 10) at Ae:
The rally starts (and BRC crews re-start) from Lockerbie at 8.20am on Saturday morning
Spectator Stage: Castle O’er at 9.10am and again from 1.30pm:
The Spectator area is signposted from the B723, 4 miles south west of Eskdalemuir. Look out for the green arrows.
The Spectator area in Ae Forest will host two runs of the stage. The first run at 11.30am will feature the full field, while the second run at 4.15pm will be for British Rally Championship contenders only. Make your way to Ae village, 5 miles north of Dumfries just off the A701 and access to the forest is through the village past the Forestry Commission workshops following the green arrows.
Ceremonial Finish: Moffat from around 5pm
The town of Moffat will play host to the ceremonial finish for the British Rally Championship survivors at around 5pm for the traditional champagne shower. The High Street in Moffat is a broad avenue affair, but parking is limited in the area, so be careful!
There are a couple of good chippies in the town – beside the Balmoral Hotel and just off the Main Street in Church Street. And dinnae forget the Moffat Toffee shop! One visit and ye’ll be sookin’ for weeks.
National B Finish:
This will actually take place at the Lockerbie Lorry Park with the first cars and winners expected around 2.30pm. Sadly no chip shops and no Moffat Toffee shop, so hopefully the truckers’ breakfasts will still be on the go!
(Sadly, the Service Area at Lockerbie is out of bounds to spectators).
