… Albar Kames Trophy Rally, supported by Lochlie Construction Group, Sun 15th May …
The Albar Kames Trophy Rally, supported by Lochlie Construction Group, will take to the Muirkirk track in Ayrshire this weekend on Sunday 15th May. A full entry of 35 cars have entered including a dozen Junior 1000 entries for 14 to 17 year olds in their 1 litre cars.
Heading the entry list is Ross Auld who has a novel way of using up old tyres while Colin Gemmell is hoping to debut his rather unique Volkswagen Golf on which he has been working for the past three years. Running at Number 3 is that well known film star Dick Dastardly’s stunt double, Dangerous Des Campbell.
Further down the entry list are a couple of notable entries for Niall Cowan Jnr and Willie Paterson. They are each down to drive an MG 3. These are interesting cars simply because Niall Cowan Snr has an idea for a less costly one-make series using MG 3 cars. This is aimed primarily at those youngsters stepping up from the Junior 1000 category when they reach 17 years of age. Otherwise they face a severe financial shock if they go down the ‘homologated’ car route. Niall reckons a car can be built for around £5000, which is still more expensive than a pair of fitba’ boots or set of golf clubs but certainly much cheaper than any other ‘beginner’s’ rally formula.
Niall has already proved how effective and competitive these cars can be and this Sunday folk can see for themselves. Not confined to the youngsters, anyone can build or buy one of these and go rallying for fun without breaking the bank, providing an ideal introduction to the sport.
I’ll publish more details after Sunday anyway for those of you can’t make it. However, with Covid restrictions now much less severe than they were, spectators are once again welcome at the Kames facility in Muirkirk – and the cafe will be open. But a word of warning, if anyone eats the last pie before my Big Pal Jaggy arrives, there will be trouble.
The first of 16 Special Stages will get underway at 09.10 Hrs on Sunday morning. Rally Results as usual will be posted on-line by: http://www.scotresults.co.uk/
