… Carlisle Stages Rally, Saturday 23rd October
Round 5 – KNC Groundworks Scottish Rally Championship …
Duel for the crown … The title of 2021 Scottish Rally Champion will be decided on neutral territory this Saturday – in England! Well, most of it, as the main rally route is contained within the giant Kielder Forest which straddles the Scotland/England border.
That’s because the final round this year is the Carlisle Stages Rally, and despite the name, it won’t actually be based in Carlisle, being entirely contained within this Northumbrian National Park plus a wee bit of Scotland at the most northern edge just so that no-one gets withdrawal symptoms as they step over the border.
Freddie Milne’s trouble’s on the previous round mean that the title chase has now been reduced to a straight two team fight on Saturday. Freddie and Patrick Walsh will still be there despite their high hopes at the start of the season being dashed by misfortune. Even so, they might still have a part to play in determining the outcome as a fast finish from Freddie’s pace could upset the final points tallies.
That means it’s all down to Jock Armstrong and Cameron Fair, and Garry Pearson and Niall Burns. If you take away Jock’s lowest score his total points tally from his best 3 rounds is 84 points compared to Garry’s 85, so Jock needs to finish ahead of Garry to add to his score. Having said that, with only 3 scores to his credit from 4 rounds, Garry needs to finish to be able to add to it as the best 4 scores from this year’s shortened 5 round series will count towards overall points. So the pressure is on them both.
The top Co-drivers are in a similar position with Cameron Fair leading the series but his biggest threat is 4th placed Niall Burns who is only counting 3 scores so far, so speed will have to be tempered with caution.
Elsewhere there is still plenty to fight for in the multitude of classes within the KNC Groundworks national series and a full report will be published here later next week.
